This rash is very common in children with eczema or dry skin and always gets worse in the summer with more sun exposure and better in the winter. It affects children more than teenagers, gets better with age, and is more common in darker skin types. It is not contagious, even though it is frequently mistaken as a "fungal infection." It also is not permanent and does not cause scarring. The skin is usually dry and flaky on the cheeks and slightly lighter than surrounding skin, giving the child a "splotchy" face.

            Treatment of pityriasis abla is simple and safe. I recommend using a daily facial moisturizer with sunscreen. Examples include Cetaphil facial moisturizer with spf or Cereve AM. For very sensitive skin types, I recommend vanicream sunscreen.
